Five Things to Remember About Vegas Sports Books

With the College or Pro Football you are into, it is time to revisit sports books and betting in Las Vegas.

Five Things to Remember about Vegas Sportsbooks

1) Don’t sleep in the Sports Book just to save a seat. Some of you are surprised to hear that people sleep in Sports Books. Just walk by at 3am on the eve of Superbowl or March Madness and you will see plenty of them. There are many other places to watch the games, such as casino bars, gentlemen’s clubs, and restaurants bars.

2) Don’t wait until the last second to bet. It gets crowded and you don’t want to spend 1 hour in line to make that $11 bet. It is better to make the bet the night before. Don't worry, the line won''t change that much.

3) Don’t forget to ask for Drink Tickets when you make a bet. You will need them to get the comp drinks from the cocktail servers. If you don't ask you won't get, so be sure to ask every time you make a bet.

4) Don’t bet on non-televised games.Part of the fun of betting on a game, is watching the drama unfold. Otherwise, you are watching the sports ticker at the bottom of ESPN to see if you won.

5) Don’t forget to cash in your winning ticket when you leave. Many people go home with tickets and never remember to bring them back to cash them. Don't let this happen to you.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
True Vegas Advice: Make Sure You Have Money to Double Down and Split

He exchanges his cash for chips and is playing for 20 minutes. He has $20 left. He bets all $20. The dealer gives him two 8s versus the dealers 7. What is he suppose to do? He either has to hit or stand. The dealer is not going to not let Ralph go to the ATM to get $20 more bucks. Maybe if there was a buddy at the table he could borrow $20, but he doesn't. So he reluctantly takes a hit, gets a 10 and busts. The dealer flips over the hole card for 17. Don't let this happen to you. Don't bet every dollar you have on you. Always make sure you have enough in reserve to double down or split if you have to.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
True Vegas Advice: Checking Out of Your Hotel

Remember these three points of advice when you have to check out of your room.

1) Skip the Checkout. When you check out, don't waste your time standing in the long line at the front desk. Use the check out on your television or just leave and have the bill put on your credit card.

2) Check-Out Times Are Not Set in Stone. If they say check-out time is 10 a.m., don't worry if is 11 a.m. before you roll out. If they call your room, just tell them you are packing your stuff. Take your time and play stupid if they give you a hard time.

3) Check Your Bags With the Bell Desk. If you flight leaves later, check your bags with the bell staff. If you are going to spend the rest of your time at a different hotel before you leave, bring your bags with you and check them in with the bell desk at the hotel. You don't have to be a guest there to check you bags.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Classic Vegas Mistake: Not Knowing Dice Etiquette When Playing Craps

You don't want to look like a novice when handling the dice. When it is your turn to be the shooter, the dealer will push over five dice to you. Select two dice with you thumb and index finger and move them away from the other three. The dealer will pull away from other three dice. Leave the two dice on the felt and make sure you have your pass line bet on the table. (Do not bet Do Not Pass when you are the shooter, unless you want to piss off the rest of the table).

Pick up the dice with your thumb and index finger in your right hand. (This isn't like playing Axis and Allies when you were a kid, you can't shake the dice with two hands). Next, don't bring the dice above the rim of the table. Blowing on the dice is strictly for the movies - if you do, you'll look like an idiot. Now, use an underhand motion and throw a nice soft arc having the dice first hit the table about three fourths down on the table. The dice should bounce once, and then bounce off the backstop of the table and come to a stop on the far side.

Look, if you don't put enough mustard behind it, the dice will drop in the middle of the table and you'll get a reation akin to that person who throws the opening pitch only to have the ball hit the dirt fifteen feet in front of the catcher.

Conversely, you don't want to put so much behind it that the dice ricochets off the table and onto the floor. If that happens, it is considered bad luck at the table, so you have already dug yourself a hole with the other players. As someone is fishing the dice off the floor, the dealer will push the three other dice to you. Quietly select two dice and this time throw lower and softer (and pray for a good role and that the dice don't leave the table again).

If you are in the middle of a big role and the dice leave the table, you should call out "same dice" to the dealer. This will insure that the "lucky" dice that have been making everyone money are still in use. Do not call "same dice" if you are coming out or if you are in the beginning stage of your role.

Practice makes perfect, so pick up a pair of dice in the gift shop and throw them in your room. If you're still not comfortable with your throws, just say "pass" when asked to be the shooter and let someone else throw them.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
True Vegas Advice: Play First Base if You Are New to Blackjack

This way, you won't be caught up with all action of the other players, and if you make a bonehead move that causes all the players to lose, they won't be able to directly blame it on you because so many cards had been played since your move.

In the third base position, you are last to be dealt to before the dealer. Make the wrong move and the dealer will get a different card than he would have had you played directly, and everyone might lose. Do that enough and the other players will blame you for losing - not an experience you will really cherish.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Classic Vegas Mistake: A Journey to the Kitschy Part of the Strip

At least one of the guys in your party will want to check out the kitschy part of the Strip. Just remember there is a thin line between kitschy and pathetic. Slots-A-Fun and Circus Circus are just plain pathetic. These two sideshow attractions at the end of the Strip will take the wind out of your sails, really fast. Both seem to be competing for the best hot dog deal on the planet, and although it’s unfair to declare a winner, it’s probably best to avoid both of them. Slots-A-Fun’s showroom/bar usually features one of the worst Elvis impersonators that you’ll ever find. The patrons of these places will most likely remind you of everyone you’ve ever seen on America’s Most Wanted.

Circus Circus in particular is one to steer clear of during the day. While the steak house here is great at night, avoid the big top when the sun is out. If you’re a dad, the last thing you want on your vacation with the boys is to endure the sounds of a bunch of screaming kids. If you don’t have kids, five minutes in Circus Circus will make you start saving up for a vasectomy. Oh, yeah: If you do decide to go down to this part of the Strip, see which one of your friends is man enough to try the 99-cent shrimp cocktail, a unique treat that is easy on the wallet and tough on the stomach.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Cigars – Make the Meal a Celebration

It’s great to get together with your whole group, light up cigars, and shoot the shit. You can always avoid the expense and limited selection at the restaurant by bringing your own. In addition to the cigar boutiques inside most major hotels, there are a number of small liquor stores on the Strip that carry a good selection of cigars. Distribute a cigar to everyone in our group and smoke them together in celebration.

Here are a few basics for making your selection:

Origin
Stick with cigars from Honduras or the Dominican Republic. Other cigars from Jamaica, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua are good only if you really know what you are doing.

Brand
Choose from the following types: Padron, Davidoff, Don Tomas, Montecristo, Macanudo, Avo, or Romeo y Julieta. All the lesser known brands can be hit-or-miss on quality.

Wrapper
Select one with a lighter color wrapper. Cigars with dark wrappers have a much stronger taste that will be overwhelming for the novice.

Size
Stick with smaller size Corona or Robusto, and avoid the big sizes of Presidentes, Double Coronas, and Churchill’s. Sure, the huge cigars look cool, but they take literally forever to smoke.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
True Vegas Advice: Avoid the Sunday Airport Blues

Leaving Las Vegas on Sunday can be brutal. While the city is amazing in its ability to draw people in, chew them up, and spit them back out as it prepares for new arrivals with great efficiency, that efficiency doesn’t extend to airport departures. Though McCarran is a well-run airport, the Sunday crowds are overwhelming. Not only is there a ton of people leaving, everyone is broke, tired, hung over, and hungry. A lot of people have not slept, and their B.O. fills the air. You hear people coughing everywhere because everyone smokes in Vegas, even people who usually never smoke. Their bodies are going through rejection. On top of the secondhand smoke inhalation, the lack of sleep, and the disheveled appearance, everyone is downright pissed. The excitement and energy that filled the air on your arrival is gone. Replacing it is a morbid environment of grumpy people who just want to get home. You don’t want to spend one second more than you have to in McCarran on Sunday.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Classic Vegas Mistake: Buying a Over Priced Cigar

You don't buy cigars often, most of the time one of your golfing buddies is giving you one to smoke on the course. So how much does a good cigar cost? Is a cigar better if it is more expensive? All good questions for someone that doesn't smoke cigars often.

Many restaurants, bars, and smoke shops in Vegas know this. They know that most people buying cigars in Vegas don't normally smoke. So, they have the price of the cigars jacked up and often give you bad advice.

One cigar shop is notorious about this. It is a cigar store in front of Smith & Wollenskies. Smith & Wollenskies is a great steakhouse and a Black Book favorite. This cigar shop is not affiliated with it thankfully.

At night, there are tons of drunk men stumbling out of the restaurant wanting to buy a cigar. Do you know the first cigar this store pushes? Some $45 Cigar with a Cuban sounding name. No true cigar smoker has ever heard of it. The Fuente Fuente Opus X Cigar, which is considered the top echelon is only $27. Most people don't bite on the $45 cigar pitch. When you say you need something less expensive, they offer you a $20 piece of garbage cigar that is equivalent of a Swisher Sweet. You think that you got a good deal, but you really got ripped off.

These cigar scammers set the price so high when you first ask, you think the next cigar is a bargain. Don't fall for any of this. A solid cigar can be found between $10 and $15, pass on it if it is higher than that. And just laugh when someone offers you a $45 cigar. Keep looking around until you find something that looks and feels like a good cigar but costs a lot less.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Hidden Vegas Gem: Carnival Court at Harrahs

This open-air bar is the embodiment of Vegas fun. It’s one of the best times in Vegas, period. Be sure to stop as you are strolling up the Strip.

There is usually a small line to get in. The cover charge for men can range from $2 to $5 — one of the best deals in town. It's a full-out party at the bar area, with flare bartenders who juggle their bottles Cocktail style, sing, dance, and occasionally breathe fire. Onstage, expect to find cheesy bands and lounge singers. Everyone here is out to have some fun. In addition, if some of your group just has to gamble and does not want to leave the tables, the whole group will like it here because Carnival Court has blackjack tables inside the venue. Number of Women: Plentiful. Most of them are Midwestern girls who have probably been out drinking all day.

The dance floor is a great spot to pick up. There are tons of girls dancing all around looking to meet guys. All you need to do is bust out some of your lame moves and they’ll be all over you. Trust us, they’re not looking for a guy who can dance, because they certainly can’t. The second-best place to pick up is the bar. The girls love the bar here because the bartenders reel them in with their theatrics. Stay on the outside of the bar, where you’ll be able to get a good look at the ladies. If you make the mistake of sitting directly at the bar, you’ll be stuck facing inward with no ability to scope the scene.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
True Vegas Advice: Vegas Gentleman’s Clubs to Avoid

These clubs are scams. Even though the taxi driver will deny this, they get a kickback on the entry fee when they deliver a person to these clubs.

Yes, there will be a couple of dancers there. But the place will be very shady, the drinks expensive (if they serve alcohol at all), the cover price steep, the girls will be a 1 or 2 out of 10, and you will not enjoy the experience. Most likely, you will be kicking yourself afterwards for listening to a taxi driver.

Remember you are in charge; demand to be taken to one of the clubs in the Las Vegas Little Black Book.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
True Vegas Advice: Deuling Piano Bars Are a Great Place to Meet Women

It seems like these Piano bars are sprouting up all over Vegas. While many guys view them as lame, these gems are a congregation of available women. Here are some benefits for visiting the piano bars:

Open Early. While nightclubs open at 10 or 11pm, Piano Bars are open around 5 or 6pm. And if a group of girls starts drinking at 5pm, you know that it will get a little crazy.

Fun and Social Atmosphere. The pianist are not just playing the piano. They are creating a social atmosphere where everyone is engaged in the performance. So leave your attitude at the door and have some cheesy fun.

Get Drunk Attitude. It is a bar and people drink at bars. There is no massive dance floor or anything to gawk at. There is a bar, two pianos, and people. People tend to drink more at bars than nightclubs.

No VIP or social "clicks". At most nightlife venues there is a place for the general public and the place for the VIP (or anyone willing to shell out big bucks). Everyone is on a equal playing field at the Piano Bars; guys spending lots of money don't get any preferential treatment.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Hidden Vegas Gem: The ABC Store in Miracle Mile

Buying beer, alcohol and snacks is a real expensive pain when at a big resort hotel. Most of them don't have mini-bars and the gift shop's selection is limited with jacked up prices. ABC to the rescue! If you are staying at Planet Hollywood, the ABC store is just outside the casino by the sports book and the Hawaiian Tropic Zone. It is only steps away. They have bottles of every type of alcohol, six packs of beer and coke, and every type of snack that you need.

And here is the kicker: all the prices are normal grocery store prices. Maybe the ABC folks haven't taken Econ 101, but I am sure not going to let them know they could double their prices and their sales would be the same. Before you go up to your room, buy a small bottle of Bacardi, a six pack of coke to mix it with, a six pack of beer, some Pringles and pretzels. On the beer, just be sure they have screw off tops, so skip Corona and Heineken. Back up in the room when you are getting ready to go out, drink the beer first because you have to keep them cold. Grab a bucket of ice for when you are ready to make a Bacardi and Coke. You are good to go.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
True Vegas Advice: Tip Properly at Blackjack

You are up big time at Blackjack and you are having a great time with the dealer. You want to give a tip, but what is the normal way to do it?

Instead of just giving the tip to the dealer, you should make a bet for the dealer. Trust me, dealers are degenerate gamblers, they want to bet their tip money. To make a bet for the dealer, place a $1 or $5 chip right above the betting circle. If you win your hand, the dealer wins too and puts both the tip and the pay out of the tip in the tip box. They are not allowed to have their tip ride for another round of betting.

Is $1 enough to tip? Yes, it is actually better to tip $1 five times than to bet $5 one time. It is more fun for the dealer and the dealer will at least win a couple of the times. Plus, the dealer gets to do the "tap tap" of the chip on the edge of the table that signals to the pit boss that the dealer is placing a tip in the tip box.

The "tap tap" is actually a way to show off to the other dealers. Dealers split their tips and get pissed off at dealers that are not caring their weight getting tips. So, if the dealer is doing the tap often, it shows that he is bringing money for the dealers, allowing him to fit in better with his co-workers.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Classic Vegas Mistake: Not so Hot Tubbin

Having a Jacuzzi tub in the middle of your suite sounds pretty sweet. Well, it’s not. Although it’s a nice option for a romantic weekend, it’s no fun to see one of your friends lying naked in boiling water at five a.m. We know what you’re thinking: “If we get the Jacuzzi, we’ll be able to get some girls to head up to the room with us.” Trust us, any girl who’s willing to go up to your room with you is willing to go up to your room with you — the Jacuzzi will not be the determining factor. Lots of guys go this route and spend half their trip trying to convince women to head up to their room for some hot tubbing. Plus, a Jacuzzi takes up a lot of space that you’ll probably need based on the number of people you’ll have staying in the room, not to mention it’s loud as hell and takes forever to fill up.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Hidden Vegas Gem: The Gun Store - Shoot 'Em Up

Interested in something you can’t do at home? Unless home is Detroit, chances are you haven’t ever had the chance to shoot an assault rifle before. Wanna try one? You’ll need to catch a cab, because this adventure takes place three and a half miles off the Strip at The Gun Store. The Gun Store will allow you a chance to rent several different machine guns. That’s right, machine guns. You’ll have the opportunity to take target practice with an M16, AK-47, and Uzi 9MM. These are the real deal: something the kick will make you realize the second you pull the trigger. In addition to the rifles, you can fire off a few rounds Dirty Harry-style with .357 and .44 Magnums. If you were looking for another Vegas story to tell the guys back home, I think you found it. Be sure to make a reservation in advance: This is a popular pastime.

The Gun Store: 702-454-1110 - www.thegunstorelasvegas.com

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
Classic Vegas Mistake: Not Having a Plan After a Big Steak Dinner

A big steak dinner is going to fill you up big-time. You’re not going to feel like going out; you will be a little worn down. Some of your guys are going to want to go back to the hotel and go to bed. You owe it to the group to keep things moving. Have a plan for what to do afterward, otherwise you’ll all end up going back to your hotel, having a drink or two, and will wind up watching the “players” in your group lose some money at the tables. This isn’t our idea of a good time, and you shouldn’t settle for letting this lame-o fate befall your crew. Perhaps a bar or gentlemen’s club is your best bet. Whatever you choose, decide ahead and keep your boys moving.

Want more Classic Vegas Mistakes?
