Classic Vegas Mistake: Throwing a Party in Your Suite
7/22/10, 9:45 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

A lot of guys use having a room party as one of their primary motivating factors for upgrading to a suite. Although there are plenty of great reasons to upgrade to a suite, having a room party ainít one of them. This is not Boise, this is Vegas. What can you do in your room that you canít do anywhere else in town? Thereís always an open bar, so saying itís the only place for a nightcap is not much of an excuse. Itís one thing to convince some women to come back up to your room to call it a night; itís another to actually plan a party in your room. If you opt to plan a party in your room, expect that you and your friends will be the only ones attending. And if things get out of hand, youíll have to live with the consequences. Even in the largest suites you might need to sleep in close quarters, so why ruin your good time by having to sleep in a bed that got soaked with beer ó or worse ó during your lame party?

Classic Vegas Mistake: Listening to Uniformed Opinions
7/20/10, 9:46 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

When you announce your trip to coworkers and friends, youíll be besieged by ďadvice.Ē Donít listen to everything they say. Everyone whoís been to Vegas thinks they know how the town really works, and usually, well, they donít. Unless your buddy is a seasoned Vegas veteran, they probably donít have much of a clue. So when the boss steers you into his office and confidentially clues you in to the perfect little cocktail joint off the Strip where the drinks are strong and the women easy, smile and say thanks. Just realize they probably turned that joint into a Toys ďRĒ Us back in 1989. Get what you deserve: Let the Little Black Book be your guide.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Trying to Count Cards
7/18/10, 9:37 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

Donít confuse yourself on card counting systems. Card counting is very difficult and you will end up losing more hands if you donít do it right, or if you have had a couple of drinks and miss a card or two. The casinos frown on it anyway, and successful card counters eventually get banned from play. While thatís assuredly not going to be you, you donít want to risk getting 86íd from the casino, do you? Learn basic strategy and stick with it.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Bringing Back What Happened in Vegas
7/16/10, 9:23 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

One of the biggest disservices you can do to your fellow Vegas veterans is airing their dirty laundry. There exists a code among men, and within that code is a clause that clearly states: ďA Man cannot share embarrassing details about his fellow Man without that Man being present.Ē It goes on to state that you cannot share salacious (and true) tidbits with spouses or girlfriends. Trust us, your buddy didnít decide to do some crazy stuff out of sight of his wifeís watchful eyes with the intention of going home and telling her about it. Itís a known fact that the three biggest causes for divorce are money, infidelity, and Vegas. Do everyone a favor and adhere to the maxim ďWhat happens in VegasÖĒ ó you know the rest. Those commercials arenít part of a marketing campaign, theyíre public service announcements.

Classic Vegas Mistake: The Romantic Setting
7/14/10, 9:06 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

Donít wind up at a place thatís romantic. Places such as the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris or the Top of the World at Stratosphere are not what a group of guys is looking for. They sound nice on paper, but youíll quickly find youíre the loudest, drunkest diners in the place and will probably be asked to leave. Sure, you may see a marriage proposal or two, but thatís not why you came here.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Not Having a Plan After a Big Steak Dinner
7/12/10, 9:01 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

A big steak dinner is going to fill you up big-time. Youíre not going to feel like going out; you will be a little worn down. Some of your guys are going to want to go back to the hotel and go to bed. You owe it to the group to keep things moving. Have a plan for what to do afterward, otherwise youíll all end up going back to your hotel, having a drink or two, and will wind up watching the ďplayersĒ in your group lose some money at the tables. This isnít our idea of a good time, and you shouldnít settle for letting this lame-o fate befall your crew. Perhaps a bar or gentlemenís club is your best bet. Whatever you choose, decide ahead and keep your boys moving.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Not so Hot Tubbin
7/10/10, 8:10 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

Having a Jacuzzi tub in the middle of your suite sounds pretty sweet. Well, itís not. Although itís a nice option for a romantic weekend, itís no fun to see one of your friends lying naked in boiling water at five a.m. We know what youíre thinking: ďIf we get the Jacuzzi, weíll be able to get some girls to head up to the room with us.Ē Trust us, any girl whoís willing to go up to your room with you is willing to go up to your room with you ó the Jacuzzi will not be the determining factor. Lots of guys go this route and spend half their trip trying to convince women to head up to their room for some hot tubbing. Plus, a Jacuzzi takes up a lot of space that youíll probably need based on the number of people youíll have staying in the room, not to mention itís loud as hell and takes forever to fill up.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Buying a Over Priced Cigar
7/4/10, 9:34 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

You don't buy cigars often, most of the time one of your golfing buddies is giving you one to smoke on the course. So how much does a good cigar cost? Is a cigar better if it is more expensive? All good questions for someone that doesn't smoke cigars often.

Many restaurants, bars, and smoke shops in Vegas know this. They know that most people buying cigars in Vegas don't normally smoke. So, they have the price of the cigars jacked up and often give you bad advice.

One cigar shop is notorious about this. It is a cigar store in front of Smith & Wollenskies. Smith & Wollenskies is a great steakhouse and a Black Book favorite. This cigar shop is not affiliated with it thankfully.

At night, there are tons of drunk men stumbling out of the restaurant wanting to buy a cigar. Do you know the first cigar this store pushes? Some $45 Cigar with a Cuban sounding name. No true cigar smoker has ever heard of it. The Fuente Fuente Opus X Cigar, which is considered the top echelon is only $27. Most people don't bite on the $45 cigar pitch. When you say you need something less expensive, they offer you a $20 piece of garbage cigar that is equivalent of a Swisher Sweet. You think that you got a good deal, but you really got ripped off.

These cigar scammers set the price so high when you first ask, you think the next cigar is a bargain. Don't fall for any of this. A solid cigar can be found between $10 and $15, pass on it if it is higher than that. And just laugh when someone offers you a $45 cigar. Keep looking around until you find something that looks and feels like a good cigar but costs a lot less.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Leaving Money at the Table
7/2/10, 8:22 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

Every day I see people, after a hour long session at a table game, make their last bet with all the chips they have left. They are usually standing up and ready to lose.

But at least twice a day, the person thinks they lost and actually walks away from the table while their bet wins.

The dealer then yells out to the player, trying to get their attention. If they don't get their attention, then the Pit Boss has to try to track him down in the casino to bring him back to the table to get his chips.

The last thing you want to do when you just lost money to a casino is have the whole place stop and stare at you as you walk back to the table to pick up your $10.

Don't be embarrased, just wait until the chips are taken from the dealer. Better yet, don't bet your last chips. It is nice to walk away from the table with at least a couple dollars left.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Betting All Your Chips Because the Cashier Cage is Far Away
7/1/10, 8:51 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

There will be times in Vegas where you will be out playing table games at a casino and you are all set to leave with your group. After you color up, you scan the casino and find no cashier cage in sight. You ask the pit boss and he says it is at the other side of the casino. (For example, Caesar's has table game pits that are a good five minute walk from the closest cashier).

Since your group is antsy to leave and traveling in the opposite direction of the cashier, there is no way you are going to make everyone wait around for you to change out $40. So what do you do? Most people make a $40 bet and actually hope to lose. If they win, they bet the entire amount again and hope to lose so they can get out of there.

Don't just bet to lose. What people don't realize in Vegas is that Strip casinos actually take each other's chips. Just walk up another casino's cashier cage and ask them to cash your chips out. Or when you sit down at a table game, just place the other casino's chips on the table and the dealer will change them out to their chips.

Each month, all the casino's get together and change out each others chips. So, don't worry about leaving a casino with chips, just use them at the next casinos.
