Hidden Vegas Gem: Casino Royale
7/24/10, 8:02 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Most people donít know about Casino Royale. Wedged in between Harrahís and the Venetian on the east side of the Strip, people walk right by it. It has a surprising 152 rooms, an Outback, a Dennyís, 400 slots, and about 30 table games, but is still dwarfed by the Mega Resorts.

Five Reasons To Love Casino RoyaleÖ

1) Cheap Drinks. $1 Michelobs and $1 Margaritas are standard from the bar. Why wait for a waitress to come by for a free drink? Youíll see the line of people at the end of the bar waiting for a drink, but donít worry, it moves fast. Grab a drink and hit the tables or grab a couple for a walk on the Strip.

2) Blackjack Switch. Or just ďSwitchĒ. A new version of Blackjack that low rollers love. It is a fun game because it brings a whole new level of skill because there are more decisions to make than just basic Blackjack strategy.

You start by making two identical bets. The dealer deals you two hands of cards. The player has the option to switch the top two cards of his hands. For example, if a player is dealt a Ace Ė Four and a Seven Ė King, then the player would be able to switch the top cards to make a Seven Ė Four and an Ace Ė King. The disadvantages are that Blackjacks pay even money and if the dealer makes a hard total of 22 then all bets push.

The theoretical house advantage (0.30%) makes it better than traditional blackjack games. But, you'll have to employ a lot more than basic blackjack strategy to take some money home.

3) Sit Down Mini-Craps Table. The only one that I have seen in town, take a seat along 5 other players at a craps game with one dealer. You wonít have the fun and energetic atmosphere of a normal craps table, but you will be able to get off your feet and not have to stand shoulder to shoulder with a complete stranger. Even better, the table minimum is usually $2 with 10x odds.

4) Beveled Mirrors over the Table Games. Along the ceiling above the table games are beveled mirrors that allow you to view all of the table action without looking over somebodyís shoulder. It adds a nice feel to the room because you see gaming action everywhere.

5) No Cares in the World. Youíll notice that everyone here is having a good time because they arenít losing a lot of money. You can let loose and make an idiot of yourself, which is something I have perfected.

Hidden Vegas Gem: The ABC Store in Miracle Mile
7/8/10, 8:45 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Buying beer, alcohol and snacks is a real expensive pain when at a big resort hotel. Most of them don't have mini-bars and the gift shop's selection is limited with jacked up prices. ABC to the rescue! If you are staying at Planet Hollywood, the ABC store is just outside the casino by the sports book and the Hawaiian Tropic Zone. It is only steps away. They have bottles of every type of alcohol, six packs of beer and coke, and every type of snack that you need.

And here is the kicker: all the prices are normal grocery store prices. Maybe the ABC folks haven't taken Econ 101, but I am sure not going to let them know they could double their prices and their sales would be the same. Before you go up to your room, buy a small bottle of Bacardi, a six pack of coke to mix it with, a six pack of beer, some Pringles and pretzels. On the beer, just be sure they have screw off tops, so skip Corona and Heineken. Back up in the room when you are getting ready to go out, drink the beer first because you have to keep them cold. Grab a bucket of ice for when you are ready to make a Bacardi and Coke. You are good to go.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Carnival Court at Harrahs
7/5/10, 8:18 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

This open-air bar is the embodiment of Vegas fun. Itís one of the best times in Vegas, period. Be sure to stop as you are strolling up the Strip.

There is usually a small line to get in. The cover charge for men can range from $2 to $5 ó one of the best deals in town. It's a full-out party at the bar area, with flare bartenders who juggle their bottles Cocktail style, sing, dance, and occasionally breathe fire. Onstage, expect to find cheesy bands and lounge singers. Everyone here is out to have some fun. In addition, if some of your group just has to gamble and does not want to leave the tables, the whole group will like it here because Carnival Court has blackjack tables inside the venue. Number of Women: Plentiful. Most of them are Midwestern girls who have probably been out drinking all day.

The dance floor is a great spot to pick up. There are tons of girls dancing all around looking to meet guys. All you need to do is bust out some of your lame moves and theyíll be all over you. Trust us, theyíre not looking for a guy who can dance, because they certainly canít. The second-best place to pick up is the bar. The girls love the bar here because the bartenders reel them in with their theatrics. Stay on the outside of the bar, where youíll be able to get a good look at the ladies. If you make the mistake of sitting directly at the bar, youíll be stuck facing inward with no ability to scope the scene.

Hidden Vegas Gem: The Barber Spa
6/18/10, 8:56 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Book an appointment at one of Vegas's two Barber Spas. You will get an old-school, straight-blade shave. You probably haven't had one of these before, and if you have, its probably be a while, so part with the $30 and enjoy. This is no ordinary shave, by any means: when was the last time you spent a half hour shaving? That's right, thirty minutes of pampering you won't soon forget. They start by warming your face with a hot towel, then apply some hand whipped shaving cream and bring out the straight razor. After they apply their ointments, balms and oils you'll feel like Al Capone in The Untouchables.

Truefitt & Hill at Caesar's Forum Shoppes: (702) 894-7472

Book an afternoon appointment before you go to Vegas. They fill up quickly.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Hard Rock Sportsbook
4/7/10, 9:18 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

The sportsbook at Hard Rock is small, nice, and low-key. Itís worth hanging here if youíre staying at the hotel. If youíre staying on the Strip but you just want to check the hotel out, watching a game might be just the reason to head over. Plasma screens, excellent cocktail servers, comfy seats, and no crowds are what Hard Rock has to offer. Right next to the sportsbook is a sports bar that has six plasmas on the wall, and booth tables with small, personalized televisions.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Casino Royale
4/4/10, 9:47 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Located between Harrahís and the Venetian, on the Strip, the Casino Royale is a great place for some low-wagering good times in a prime location. Low table minimums at this little gem make for a lively atmosphere. This is the perfect place to spend some hours on games you may be new to, or to try that strategy youíve been reading up on. Youíll notice that everyone here is having a good time because they arenít losing a lot of money.

There are two table game pits here. Avoid the small pit near the entrance to Outback Steak house ó the fun pit is the one that runs along the length of the bar. This pit has a series of low-limit craps, blackjack, roulette, and pai gow poker games. Along the roof are beveled mirrors that allow you to view all of the table action without looking over somebodyís shoulder. Why wait for a waitress to come by for a free drink; they have cheap drinks up at the bar. The standing specials here are $1 Michelob, frozen Rum Runners, and pina coladas. Youíll see the line of people at the end of the bar waiting for a drink, but donít worry, it moves fast. Grab a drink and hit the tables. With low drink prices and low table minimums, you get to play, drink, and have fun at a reasonable price. If you are getting free drinks but have to play for $25 a hand to get them, they arenít free.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Hugo's Cellar at Four Queens
3/25/10, 9:31 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Most people don't even know about Hugo's Celler. Just because it is located in Downtown vegas does not mean Hugo's can't keep up with the big boys the Strip. Hugo's is old school Vegas, back before the days of Celebrity Chefs and al la carte steaks. Head to the back of the casino and proceed down the stairs into the dark dungeon. This place is so dark, you can barely see your food. The staff is great, and the food is even better.

Be sure to get there a couple minutes early and start with a martini at the bar. The bartender will make a martini for you plus gives you a re-fill in an small iced glass. During dinner, be sure to get the Table Side Salad, the server makes it right in front of you with a plethora of options. For the main dish, stick with the Filet instead of the Ribeye. the filet is a great cut and grilled to perfection. Finish with bananas foster, another table side gold mine that you don't find at many steak houses anymore.

Call for reservations: 702-385-4011. While Hugo's Cellar might be off the beaten path, it has a huge following and you'll need the reservations.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Batista's Hole in the Wall
3/24/10, 8:56 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Eat a Batista's before Harrah's blows it up. A true Las Vegas classic, Batista's does not get the national press like other restaurants in Vegas. That is because it is own separate entity; its not part of a big casino resort.

Its located behind Bills and across Flamingo from Bally's. It does not even look like a restaurant from the outside. When you walk inside, you will have a great time looking at the old school Vegas memorabilia all over the walls.

All dinners include Minestrone Soap or Italian Salad, Garlic Bread, Pasta Side, Cappuccino and House Red or White Wine. Yes, the wine is included. It might not be the best wine in the world, but it is not bad. You'll already have a few in you by the time you get there, so you won't notice the difference anyway.

Trust us, you will enjoy Batista's. It is one of the only things that has lasted in Vegas for over 30 years and there is a reason why.
