Five Keys to a Good Vegas Steakhouse
7/23/10, 8:54 AM - True Vegas Advice

Keep these in mind when planning you big steak dinner for the boys.

1) Old-school steak house dťcor. A place with red leather booths and dim lighting is just what the doctor ordered.

2) Prime, dry-aged beef. Beef is the only thing you should be eating at a steak house, so make sure theyíve got the good stuff. Cuts of beef are classified by the USDA grading system as commercial, select, choice or prime. Prime beef is the highest quality, having the best texture, firmness, color, and marbling. Dry-aging is a climate-controlled process of storing the beef under precise conditions of temperature, humidity, and air circulation to ensure the best tenderness and flavor. Ask you server about grades and aging before you order.

3) Large-group seating. Not all places are designed to accommodate large groups; donít settle for makeshift seating arrangements or having to break your crew up into two groups. When you call ahead to book (always, always do this), check it out to make sure they fit your group in properly.

4) Music and crowds are bad. The big trend now is the blend of steakhouses and ultra-lounges. Examples are Fix, Stack, & Strip Steak. While these "trendy" places do serve up quality beef, they are not what you are looking for in the classic man's steakhouse big dinner.

5) Non-Resort Steakhouses offer better price and service. When a steakhouse is not in a resort, they serve only cash paying customers. In a casino, the majority of the customer will be comped. In order to give value to the comp, the resort jacks up the price of the menu. It appears to the customer that they just received a $300 meal for free, but that meal would only have been $200 in a non-resort steakhouse. You as a cash paying customer get screwed.

For a real Vegas hidden gem steakhouse, try the Golden Steer. Located on Sahara just west of the Strip, the Golden Steer has been serving up prime beef since 1958. It is a favorite of strip entertainers and you usually see one eating there late night. It is a true insiders hidden gem.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Throwing a Party in Your Suite
7/22/10, 9:45 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

A lot of guys use having a room party as one of their primary motivating factors for upgrading to a suite. Although there are plenty of great reasons to upgrade to a suite, having a room party ainít one of them. This is not Boise, this is Vegas. What can you do in your room that you canít do anywhere else in town? Thereís always an open bar, so saying itís the only place for a nightcap is not much of an excuse. Itís one thing to convince some women to come back up to your room to call it a night; itís another to actually plan a party in your room. If you opt to plan a party in your room, expect that you and your friends will be the only ones attending. And if things get out of hand, youíll have to live with the consequences. Even in the largest suites you might need to sleep in close quarters, so why ruin your good time by having to sleep in a bed that got soaked with beer ó or worse ó during your lame party?

True Vegas Advice: The Keys to a Good Center Bar
7/21/10, 9:10 AM - True Vegas Advice

Every good hotel needs a good bar that serves as your base camp of hotel operations. You will use the center bar more than you think. Itís the place you tell people to meet up with you, itís a meeting place when you are going out as a group, itís a place to grab a quick cocktail after check-in, and itís a place you can go to step away from the casino action and breathe. Itís also a place where the non-gamblers can have a good time while their friends are still working the tables. And, most importantly, it is a place where women tend to end up when they canít find any other viable options. It is easier to meet a girl at a bar than walking around the casino floor.

Main Requirements of a Good Center Bar

1) It must be an accessible and convenient area with a good vantage point for the entire casino. This is the base camp, you should not struggle to get there.

2) It must have large tables where a group can sit. You will need to sit and talk while waiting for your friends. You canít talk to a group when youíre sitting at a bar, so comfortable table seating is key.

3) It must be accessible, yet removed. You donít want to be part of the casino, but slightly removed from the action. Just enough that you can always step in and out of the chaos going on around you.

4) It must have a view of people passing by. An elevated center bar with a sight line of people coming toward and away from you is ideal. Then you can look at passersby without staring them down. Plus, the sooner you can see them, the more time you have to come up with a way to meet them. Donít keep your back to the action ó angle so you have a view.

5) It must have cocktail servers, the hotter and friendlier the better. The key is to get these girls on your side. They have more power than you think to slip you a couple of drinks, on the side, free of charge. Also, they can help you meet women. So be nice and generous to your cocktail server.

6) It mustnít get too crowded. A good center bar allows you to carry on a conversation in a happening environment. If people are bumping against you and the music is blaring, you might as well be in a night club. A good center bar is one thatís popular, but not too popular.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Listening to Uniformed Opinions
7/20/10, 9:46 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

When you announce your trip to coworkers and friends, youíll be besieged by ďadvice.Ē Donít listen to everything they say. Everyone whoís been to Vegas thinks they know how the town really works, and usually, well, they donít. Unless your buddy is a seasoned Vegas veteran, they probably donít have much of a clue. So when the boss steers you into his office and confidentially clues you in to the perfect little cocktail joint off the Strip where the drinks are strong and the women easy, smile and say thanks. Just realize they probably turned that joint into a Toys ďRĒ Us back in 1989. Get what you deserve: Let the Little Black Book be your guide.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Trying to Count Cards
7/18/10, 9:37 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

Donít confuse yourself on card counting systems. Card counting is very difficult and you will end up losing more hands if you donít do it right, or if you have had a couple of drinks and miss a card or two. The casinos frown on it anyway, and successful card counters eventually get banned from play. While thatís assuredly not going to be you, you donít want to risk getting 86íd from the casino, do you? Learn basic strategy and stick with it.

True Vegas Advice: Make Fun Bets While the Craps Table Is Hot
7/17/10, 8:28 AM - True Vegas Advice

Have some fun and add some pizzaz when the craps game is getting rowdy. While the winning percentages are low, there are some craps bets that are just fun to do.

The ďhardwaysĒ are bets on the four, six, eight, or ten that the number will be hit with double dice before a seven, or the number with two other dice is hit. For example, a ďhard fourĒ bet is saying that ďtwo and twoĒ will be rolled before any combination of a seven or a ďsoft fourĒ of a three and one. Bet $1 on each one by throwing out four white chips and yelling "all the hard ways".

The ďyoĒ bet is a one-roll bet where you win if an eleven is rolled. Only bet $1 on the yo bet. Get into it and yell it out like the rest of the players.

The ďhorn betĒ is a one-roll $1 bet on the two, three, eleven, and twelve. Throw a $5 chips out and yell ďhorn high yoĒ. The "high yo" means that the extra $1 from the $5 goes on the eleven, making the eleven a $2 bet.

While these bets are fun when the table is hot, stay away from the them when everyone is losing.

Classic Vegas Mistake: Bringing Back What Happened in Vegas
7/16/10, 9:23 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

One of the biggest disservices you can do to your fellow Vegas veterans is airing their dirty laundry. There exists a code among men, and within that code is a clause that clearly states: ďA Man cannot share embarrassing details about his fellow Man without that Man being present.Ē It goes on to state that you cannot share salacious (and true) tidbits with spouses or girlfriends. Trust us, your buddy didnít decide to do some crazy stuff out of sight of his wifeís watchful eyes with the intention of going home and telling her about it. Itís a known fact that the three biggest causes for divorce are money, infidelity, and Vegas. Do everyone a favor and adhere to the maxim ďWhat happens in VegasÖĒ ó you know the rest. Those commercials arenít part of a marketing campaign, theyíre public service announcements.

True Vegas Advice: Hit a Show When In Vegas
7/15/10, 9:14 AM - True Vegas Advice

Why go to a show? We know what youíre thinking: Shows are where the women go when the men are out gambling, right? Wrong. There are plenty that will appeal to your group and it is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Plus, at the very least youíre in a room full of unescorted women!

Three Reasons to Hit a Show

1) They Make for a Good Night Out: Although everything else you do in Vegas can be done at any hour, shows are only available at night. A good show is a great way to really hit the town. Itís a perfect event to plan your evening around. Follow it up with a late dinner and some drinks and youíve got yourself a memorable evening.

2) Old-School Vegas: A big show is one of the staples of a trip to Vegas. Everyone knows about the Vegas shows, and the Vegas showgirls. If you want to feel like a Vegas Rat Packer, you have to take the time to take in a show.

3) Women: You may meet some women at a show, and then again later at the nearest bar. You will have a common experience to share, so chat Ďem up. It is a great icebreaker.

Classic Vegas Mistake: The Romantic Setting
7/14/10, 9:06 AM - Classic Vegas Mistakes

Donít wind up at a place thatís romantic. Places such as the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris or the Top of the World at Stratosphere are not what a group of guys is looking for. They sound nice on paper, but youíll quickly find youíre the loudest, drunkest diners in the place and will probably be asked to leave. Sure, you may see a marriage proposal or two, but thatís not why you came here.
