Hidden Vegas Gem: Hard Rock Sportsbook
4/7/10, 9:18 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

The sportsbook at Hard Rock is small, nice, and low-key. Itís worth hanging here if youíre staying at the hotel. If youíre staying on the Strip but you just want to check the hotel out, watching a game might be just the reason to head over. Plasma screens, excellent cocktail servers, comfy seats, and no crowds are what Hard Rock has to offer. Right next to the sportsbook is a sports bar that has six plasmas on the wall, and booth tables with small, personalized televisions.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Casino Royale
4/4/10, 9:47 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Located between Harrahís and the Venetian, on the Strip, the Casino Royale is a great place for some low-wagering good times in a prime location. Low table minimums at this little gem make for a lively atmosphere. This is the perfect place to spend some hours on games you may be new to, or to try that strategy youíve been reading up on. Youíll notice that everyone here is having a good time because they arenít losing a lot of money.

There are two table game pits here. Avoid the small pit near the entrance to Outback Steak house ó the fun pit is the one that runs along the length of the bar. This pit has a series of low-limit craps, blackjack, roulette, and pai gow poker games. Along the roof are beveled mirrors that allow you to view all of the table action without looking over somebodyís shoulder. Why wait for a waitress to come by for a free drink; they have cheap drinks up at the bar. The standing specials here are $1 Michelob, frozen Rum Runners, and pina coladas. Youíll see the line of people at the end of the bar waiting for a drink, but donít worry, it moves fast. Grab a drink and hit the tables. With low drink prices and low table minimums, you get to play, drink, and have fun at a reasonable price. If you are getting free drinks but have to play for $25 a hand to get them, they arenít free.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Hugo's Cellar at Four Queens
3/25/10, 9:31 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Most people don't even know about Hugo's Celler. Just because it is located in Downtown vegas does not mean Hugo's can't keep up with the big boys the Strip. Hugo's is old school Vegas, back before the days of Celebrity Chefs and al la carte steaks. Head to the back of the casino and proceed down the stairs into the dark dungeon. This place is so dark, you can barely see your food. The staff is great, and the food is even better.

Be sure to get there a couple minutes early and start with a martini at the bar. The bartender will make a martini for you plus gives you a re-fill in an small iced glass. During dinner, be sure to get the Table Side Salad, the server makes it right in front of you with a plethora of options. For the main dish, stick with the Filet instead of the Ribeye. the filet is a great cut and grilled to perfection. Finish with bananas foster, another table side gold mine that you don't find at many steak houses anymore.

Call for reservations: 702-385-4011. While Hugo's Cellar might be off the beaten path, it has a huge following and you'll need the reservations.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Batista's Hole in the Wall
3/24/10, 8:56 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Eat a Batista's before Harrah's blows it up. A true Las Vegas classic, Batista's does not get the national press like other restaurants in Vegas. That is because it is own separate entity; its not part of a big casino resort.

Its located behind Bills and across Flamingo from Bally's. It does not even look like a restaurant from the outside. When you walk inside, you will have a great time looking at the old school Vegas memorabilia all over the walls.

All dinners include Minestrone Soap or Italian Salad, Garlic Bread, Pasta Side, Cappuccino and House Red or White Wine. Yes, the wine is included. It might not be the best wine in the world, but it is not bad. You'll already have a few in you by the time you get there, so you won't notice the difference anyway.

Trust us, you will enjoy Batista's. It is one of the only things that has lasted in Vegas for over 30 years and there is a reason why.

Hidden Vegas Gems: Steakhouse Bars
3/22/10, 9:37 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Looking for a classy bar to grab a martini? Steakhouses have excellent bars for cocktails and low key socializing. Loaded with comfortable chairs and tables, these hidden gems are more laid back than most resort center bars. Plus, you won't hear the bells of the slot machines and there won't be video poker on the bar. The bartendars are more social and they serve cocktails in the proper glasses, not the tiny 8oz glasses in the casino. As a bonus if you are hungry, you can always have a light appetizer to hold you over.

Hidden Vegas Gem: Pink Taco at the Hard Rock
3/19/10, 9:19 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

While not really hidden, Pink Taco is a gem. Great food and a great atmosphere. The food is a California spin on traditional Mexican dishes. There never is a line, but it always seems to be packed. When they seat you, trying not go get the "park bench" seats which are with out backs on the immediate right when you walk in. Choose to sit around the bar or at least have a table that is backed up against a booth.

It is loud in Pink Taco, but that is what it makes it fun. It is a little tough to meet girls here, but the atmosphere sure beats the normal lame Mexican restaurants in other casino resorts on the Strip. It is a great place to start off the night.

Hit Happy Hour Monday - Friday from 4p-7p. 2-for-1 beers and half price appetizers.

Hidden Vegas Gem: The Peppermill
3/15/10, 9:58 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

If you are on the north side part of the Strip and have a rental car, the Peppermill is a perfect coffee shop choice. The old-school Vegas favorite has your wings, nachos and quesadillas covered, but the breakfast items get the top billing starring the pancakes, omelets and waffles. What ever the time of day, you are bound to see people nursing a Peppermill Bloody Mary. These concoctions are justly famous for soothing the soulof late night casino refugees.

Hidden Vegas Gem: The Steakhouse at Circus Circus
2/1/10, 8:46 AM - Hidden Vegas Gems

Just named ďThe SteakhouseĒ, this resturant at Circus Circus is a real gem.

Getting to the steakhouse is the hardest part. Circus Circus is an old casino that has been expanded many times over. Thus, it is very hard to navigate through the parking lot, parking garage and valet. Once you find your way, the steakhouse is located in the middle of the casino. You will walk right by it if you donít pay attention.

Once inside, you feel like you are in old Vegas. Red leather booths. Huge martinis. Old school high quality service (versus the teenager serving you at some restaurants around Vegas) These servers have experience and knowledge of food and wine.

Order the rib eye medium, it comes with a remarkable house salad and one side. Get the loaded baked potato.

The meat is grilled over a charcoal pit in the middle of the restaurant (donít ask about health concerns, maybe they were grand fathered in because Circus Circus is so old). The steak ends up nice and charred on the outside with a nice tender texture on the inside.

Between the dťcor, service and food, the Steakhouse at Circus Circus is unbelievable. You will enjoy every minute of the dining experience.

Check out the Circus Circus Website
